Your School Can Help to Support Young Refugees
We are constantly inspired by the kindness of younger generations, who we find have such a curiosity to learn and want to support one another no matter their background. This includes the young refugees that we work with. We are really keen to spread awareness and involve school communities within our work, whether it is through fundraising or teaching them about our work through assemblies and workshops.
How you and your school could get involved
If your school is interested in any of these activities, kindly reach out to us via email at fundraising@youngroots.org.uk
Workshops and assemblies
Consider inviting one of our team members to speak at your school! During the session, we can delve into our work, discuss the unique challenges encountered by the young people we support, and explore how the funds you raise will make a difference. With workshops directed at smaller classes, we can also make the session interactive and have insightful discussions on the topic as a whole.

“I am now more active because you help me to access education and I don't need to stay all the time in the hotel. The college and coming to Young Roots youth activity has helped me to feel less lonely and more active.” - Young person

Why you should get involved
We want all young refugees to feel welcomed and safe in London and the whole of the UK. You can help us achieve this. There are a number of ways that you can help us to achieve this, and reasons why you should get involved with Young Roots.
Teamwork
Everyone in your school will learn to work together with the common goal of supporting the daily lives of young refugees in your area. This could be through fundraising in teams or even having group discussions.
Learning new skills
Whether it is improving critical thinking with our workshops, or learning a new activity altogether from a fundraiser, there is so much you can learn through working with us.
Supporting young refugees in your community
You can stand with and actively support young people from refugee backgrounds by learning more about their experiences and how you can champion their rights and future together.
Becoming leaders of tomorrow
Our workshops and assemblies work to empower students to see beyond labels, and instead see one another as being the same – just with different experiences. By growing this awareness and even compassion, you all can become better leaders for the future. You can become leaders who have a positive impact and welcome everyone with open arms.
Gaining new knowledge and confidence
Through assemblies and workshops, and the stories young refugees share, both you and students will learn about the current legal and social challenges they face in the UK. This also means you will gain more confidence in discussing these issues openly while spreading awareness.
Accessing our services
More practically too, if you know young people in your school who are refugees 18-25 and are interested in our activities, you can introduce them to our work. This way they can also make new friends and access our bespoke, expert services.
Refugee Week Project
Refugee Week took place from June 17th to June 23rd in 2024 .The theme was "Our Home", and everyone was encouraged to reflect and celebrate what home means to them - whether it's an individual place, a smell, or a communal sense of community or our planet. Let’s think about extending our compassion beyond our individual home and creating a more welcoming environment for all.
During Refugee Week, we invited schools to arrange their own in-house presentations using Young Roots’ resource assembly pack. This comprehensive pack comprises PowerPoint slides, a quiz, poems, case studies, and photos showcasing Young Roots’ work. Feel free to utilise these resources as you see fit!

“Young Roots offers life-affirming support to young refugees in London. Their educational programming with our school inspires avenues for my teenage students to understand, care, and take action to do what they can. From awareness campaigns to letters to local MPs, it is clear that this experience transforms learning from the head to the heart.”
— Bambi Thompson, Health Teacher at the American School in London
